watercolor paintings

2-D Art finished up watercolor paintings a few weeks ago. They learned several different ways to paint and we tried to use those in a silhouette painting. I think we'll make some changes on scale next year (work smaller!) but overall I think students enjoyed this process. We have moved on to a collage project, due in just a few days! This semester has flown by.

working on furniture

Glassworks students are working on creating mosaic furniture. They've been asked to breath new life into an old end table! Most of the furniture is here now... and if it isn't it better be ASAP! These are some pictures of student progress.

Maddie Rhodes Field Trip

Ms. Temple and I took a group of students to Kansas City for a great field trip on Halloween. Students made a Day of the Dead inspired craft, viewed alters, ate some mexican food, and visited the Kemper Art Museum. It was a really good time.

Throwing on the Wheel

It's messy, Mr. Hoch always teases us about the movie Ghost, and often it's a flop... but we love to throw on the wheel! 3-D students are learning this process, slowly but surly. We watch a video to intro this process, then I demo it (thanks mom and dad for those ceramics classes when I was a kid!), then each student tries while I talk them through it. After that, they are on their own to try and perfect the art (or at least get something worth keeping).

you tube tuesdays!

I've started "youtube Tuesdays" in my classes. I got the idea from a workshop at this years Art Education conference. We watch a short clip at the beginning of
class once a week. Youtube might seem like a stretch for a classroom
tool, but it truly is an amazing resource for art related topics.

here. The first shows an
artist's hand made creatures, they walk along the beach, surviving
mostly on their own. The second shows an improv "prank" where
hundreds of people freeze for five minutes in the middle of Grand
Central Station. Students make sure I know it's Tuesday now!

2D Art Draws

2D art started the year doing drawings. The hands are a technique called Blind Contour, students could not pick up their pens or look at their paper. I have also posted our popcorn drawings, which are a nice way for students to practice shading, and our final drawing, a still life. To see more, click here!

3D art- Ceramics

We started the year working with slabs of clay. Students made trays and cups with this technique. See more here!

Glassworks- Scrap Projects

These projects were created using only scrap glass. This project allowed students to learn about cutting glass, copper foiling, and soldering. What a great introduction to working with glass! See all of them at our facebook page!
