Advanced Art

In Advanced Art, students are giving assignments (like still life or self portrait) and then they make that art with any material they want. So I have students working with Glass, Enameling, Drawing, sculpting, and much more. They enjoy the freedom and have earned it, by doing well in at least one year of art before taking this class. They keep me on my toes, needing supplies and advice in every direction!

Polaroid Transfers... and learning to Matte Work!

We went on a photo adventure about a month ago. You may have seen us out and about... wondering the streets of Hoyt... we may have been in your yard! With us we took a couple of very old cameras. These are not the camera's of my youth, but the cameras of my fathers youth! Actually, one of them was his as a lad. After taking the photos we transferred the slimy, thin, transparent image film onto wood or paper. I love the wrinkles and aged quality you get from this type of photography. After we finished the process, I taught these art exploration students to Matte their work. This is always a little challenging... with rulers, thumbnail sketches, and MATH! The end result is impressive. These are in the hall for a few more days. Come see for yourself!

popcorn and hands

Here are a few highlights from 2-D art's last few projects.

wire sculptures

Art Exploration spent about a week creating these wire sculptures! I think they are fun and really love how the students choose to display them. Very creative.

Topeka Trip

What a day! Students started off this chilly morning with a good hike and some time to draw in nature. We went to ceder crest where the Governor lives and Topekans hike, run, and bike!

Next we headed to the Mulvane Art Museum at Washburn. This gave us a chance to visit Justin Marable's art show, see some wild instruments/sculptures by Ken Butler, and make some art down in the art lab. The art lab is free and open to the public! It is great fun.

After that we were HUNGRY! We had lunch at the Millinum Cafe at the Library. We also had a really great tour of the gallery. Our last stop was the Great Mural Wall behind the expo center on Western. By the time we got home the students were worn out...me too actually!
